G is for Goodbye For Now
Headcanons for Sherlock, Mycroft, and Moriarty
The prompt: In which you have to say a temporary goodbye (either because you or he has to leave the country for a couple weeks or something like that).
Genre: Bittersweet fluff
Rating: K+ (arguably T for Moriarty)
SHERLOCK MASTERLIST
Headcanons for when Sherlock has to be apart from his S/O for a time:
Let’s be honest he’d probably tag along with you wherever you went if he didn’t have a case. He’d try to be all smooth about it and attempt to surprise you (like dressing up as a waiter at whatever restaurant you’re visiting while away).
But if he’s on a case that takes him out of the country / or is preoccupied enough that he can’t come along then he’ll miss you like crazy(not that he would ever admit that to anyone).
(“Shut up Watson, I don’t miss anyone.”)
He’ll throw himself into something to keep his mind preoccupied while you’re separate. He’ll be desperate for a case.
Any text message he gets from you is immediately read no matter the situation.
“Sherlock we’re about to visit the queen, put your phone away.”
“No. Now do shut up.”
Be prepared for late night / early morning phone calls of him randomly checking in. Whenever you’re on his mind and an odd thought that you maybe-might-kinda-sorta be in danger he’ll promptly call you to assuage his worry.
“You really need to stop calling me at two-thirty in the morning…”
“You really need to hurry up and come home.”
If something prevents you two from being reunited (such as freaky weather) then he’ll be restless and snippy. He’ll constantly pace and snarl at anyone who tries to approach him (even John).
If someone prevents you two from being reunited then Sherlock will go out of his way to make his/her/their life miserable for however long it takes before he sees you again.
(and maybe if he feels petty enough he’ll continue to make his/her/their life miserable even after being reunited with you.)
If you’re away too long for his liking (like months away) he’ll make up some emergency to force you to come back. Might even “accidentally” get his foot shot during a case and “coincidentally” slip into a coma and won’t wake up until you return.
Once you’re reunited though, regardless of the reasons (please don’t be too mad at him for the deception, he just really missed you / “To be fair you should have foreseen my actions going into this relationship.”) he’ll be happy.
He’ll take you into his arms and kiss you as hard as he can. If he’s waiting to pick you up at the airport then the affection will stop there until you get home, but once you’re at his flat then you can expect lots of physical affection that night. You won’t be leaving his arms again any time soon.
If he’s the one who’s away then he’ll blitz through whatever is keeping him away from home. Super sassy to anyone who slows him down.
Headcanons for when Mycroft has to be away from S/O for a time
It’s rare for Mycroft to have to leave the country due to his job, but it still happens. He understands that it can’t be helped when he does leave, and he’s understanding when you have to leave.
He’s not needy or dependent, but he’ll still miss you. His smiles while the two of you are apart will be strained and barely polite. It’ll be noted by others that he seems “distinctly colder than usual.”
“Are you okay, sir? You seem a little—”
“I’m fine,” Mycroft interrupted, cold eyes glittering with barely constrained disdain.
He will absolutely buy you little things that he thinks you’ll like. Most of it will be food related, but if you’re into collecting—for example—teacups then he’ll see if he can find a unique teacup from whatever country he’s in.
He will call you every night without fail at exactly the hour you go to bed.
“Good night, my dear.”
He will message you Good morning MH every morning.
If someone prevents him from returning to you on schedule it will irritate him to the point he’ll lose his composure in public for a brief moment or two. He’ll get snippy with those involved and if it’s an actual person’s fault (not just freaky weather) he’ll be ruthless in punishing them.
Mycroft will actively try to make them run away crying.
He’ll be waiting for you at the airport when you return, but wouldn’t expect the same of you (but if you are there he’ll be extremely happy).
If reuniting in public he’ll give you a kiss on the forehead and a brief (but tight) hug. He’s not prone to PDA after all, and he is a gentleman (at least to his S/O).
But when you’re reunited in private he’ll shower you with kisses and hold your hand for the rest of the night.
He’ll make it a point to cuddle with you that night.
He’s so happy to be with you.
Headcanons for when Moriarty has to be away from his S/O
Let’s be honest: if Moriarty’s S/O has to leave the country there is no way in hell he’s letting him/her/them leave without him. He’d prefer it if his S/O remained safe and sound at home and will be entirely against his S/O going anywhere without him (even trips around London require lots of bodyguards and ahead planning).
That being said he may still have to take trips outside of the country. He’ll dislike being away from his pet for so long and will actively avoid it.
But when he finally has to do it, he’ll be as brisk and quick as he can about the whole ordeal. If, goodness forbid, something was preventing him from returning home sooner than he’d like (such as unexpected weather or an idiot making a mistake) then he’ll be extremely irritated. Heads are gonna roll when Moriarty’s in a bad mood.
“S-Sir, it looks like someone forgot t-to keep up on plane maintenance.”
Moriarty pauses in his texting to look up at his guard. The man was flushed with fear. Moriarty gave him a thin smile. “And?”
“A-And we’ll have a delayed r-return, s-sir.”
“Mmm. I see. I see.” Jim Moriarty’s eyes shone with a kind of sadistic glee. “How odd, I thought April Fool’s was last month.”
“I-It was.”
“Then I don’t see why you’re telling me this. Fix it and bring me whoever is responsible.”
Lots of texts and random phone calls to check in on you (unless he has access to the security cameras in his home then he’ll just double check that you’re okay before going about his business.)
Will absolutely buy you a bunch of really weird trinkets that he thinks you might like, or find funny.
Will carry on text conversations with you even if in the middle of a business meeting. May even take some pictures if he’s in the mood for it.
“S-Sir…?”
“Shut up, I’m talking to someone infinitely more interesting than you worthless morons.”
Reunion will be very physical and dramatic. He’ll pick you up if he can and spin you around, then kiss you all over.
You won’t be leaving his side for quite a while. Or getting out of bed.

Green, Blue, Cinnamon, Periwinkle, Blush, Indigo, Fuchsia+Copper (Yes, both of it XP), Honeydew, Coral, Umber, Razzmatazz, Arsenic, Saffron, Timberwolf, Plum, Chartreuse and Burgundy 😊💖 and a bonus, from the 'homestuck ask meme' >> John, Roxy, Dave, Karkat, Terezi, Feferi ✨
Green: I think you’re cute.:0 Thanks. I think you’re a really great person too!
Blue: You’re my Tumblr crush. KJHGSGAKDHAKYES??????
Cinnamon: You’re a really cool person and I admire you from afar.
You’re like. Really awesome too??? We should really hang out some time! Or at least talk. We probably live in totally different countries so.. Yeah!
Periwinkle: You make me laugh You’re welcome! Also same :DBlush: Seeing you on my dash makes my day a little better. I’ll literally go “CV! CV! CV!” In my head like a huge idiot whenever I see you’ve liked a post. Very mutual feeling
Indigo: I’ve been following you for a while. Yeah! We’ve been mutuals for like… 3 months? I’m pretty sure you’re one of the only people who still interacts with me after that long. Fuchsia+Copper: Your content is gold/trash (and I love it).Definitely agree on that one
Honeydew: I want to call you by a nickname. There’s no way it can be shittier than anything my irl friends have come up with. Also you seem like a way too nice person to give shitty nicknames so I’m not stopping you!
Coral: You’re a meme. 👌👌👌👌
Umber: I want to know more about youWe should totally talk sometime!
Razzmatazz: I would share my favorite food with you.I take this as a big compliment because I either have people come to eat my food during lunch (only one person has succeeded and she never brings food herself so.. Can’t let my friends starve) or I’ll try to steal the food of people’s plates during dinner
Arsenic: I don’t know how to describe the way I feel about you. Fair. I don’t know how to describe myself either. Mainly “What the hell is this” tbh. You on the other hand. I also don’t know. You’re really great though.
Saffron: I love your ideas.How. What. Which ideas? I literally can’t remember having any sort of good plans
Timberwolf: I trust you.I honestly don’t know if I should say “Horrible idea” or thank youPlum: I’d like to chat with youHell yes. Let’s do this
Chartreuse: You’re my homie. Awww yeeeee.
Burgundy:I get excited when I see your posts. If you count seeing stuff getting liked. Big same
Bonus!:
John: Do you believe in ghosts?Fuck yes. There’s been so many things that could probably have a logical explanation but “ghost” is by far the easiest.
Roxy: What’s your all time favorite video game.
Honestly I have no clue. The only games I’ve actually been able to play myself lately have been Minecraft and Hiveswap because I don’t have anything but my crappy laptop (and an iPad) that I can use to play games on and the fact my mom refuses to buy 9/10 games for me. I also watch a lot of people playing games that I can’t so I can still enjoy them so that just adds on a whole lot. Just like I’ve said about characters in a previous post everything has its ups and downs to take into consideration. Also I’m very bad at deciding on things
Dave: What’s your favorite genre of music? I don’t really listen to a lot of music but whenever I get the chance it’s a kinda mixed up soup of stuff that sounded nice. At the moment I’ve mainly been listening to stuff like gorillaz, tøp, p!atd, etc. My dad also stated the tradition of waking me up by playing music from when he was younger which has also brought some pretty cool stuff.
Karkat: What’s the longest you’ve ever gone without sleep? Probably a day? I’m usually told to go to sleep whenever it’s late so I haven’t really been able to stay up at my full extent. It’s not really a great plan to test out though…
Terezi: Do you have a strong leaning towards justice? It depends on the situation. I’ve experienced a lot of people doing stuff that isn’t fair. I guess a quick example could be one of my teachers who send out a kid because HE wasn’t keeping to the rules. That rule being everyone respects everyone. He would call kids by their last name (not standard over here) and went they asked for him not to do so. One of my friends is very touchy about his last name because of his relationship to his father and he absolutely HATES as much as hearing it. The teacher ignored their requests and told them to leave class when they objected to getting called by their last name. He wasn’t even being respectful with the last names. It was like we were prison inmates or something. In these kinds of situations screw the teachers. They might be “above” us but they still need to keep to the rules like everyone else. Now I’ve just gone on another short rant. Sorry. I’m not really sure where I was going with that anymore but in a nutshell: Justice is different in everyone’s eyes
Feferi: Do you have any pets? Yes! My cat Watson. He’s more like a brother to me in all honesty seeing how my parents got him when I was 3-ish. Also one moment he can be the sweetest cuddle buddy while the other moment he doesn’t want to know about your existence. I used to have rats but they sadly don’t live very long. I think I’ve had around 8 in total. Not at the same moment though. They were always in pairs though since rants are group animals and always need a buddy. I had a mouse named Roxy for 2 days. She was a wild mouse that I managed to catch and put in a box. Then she escaped again and made more mice in the walls. Only really mentioning this because 10 year old me already had that name in mind

10. Most loved OC and why? As hard as it to choose between all my loves, I choose Clea. She's the most like me or rather I see the most of myself in her and that was an accident. I love her attitude, her sarcasm, her badassness, her relationship with Zevran, her goals, how she carries herself and how she just is.
11. What song is stuck in your head right now? Hold Me Tight Or Don't by Fall Out Boy
@enchantment1385 second set of questions
1. What does your name mean? Do you think the meaning is anything like you? Like our usernames? Queen of the Crows is a reference to Clea who takes over the Antivan Crows with Zevran and they do some reforming of the guild. She's one of the leaders so she's the queen of the Antivan Crows, hence queen of the Crows. Is that anything like me? Well I mean she's my OC and I'm alot like her so I would hope to be that badass if I was in Thedas.

6. Biggest pet peeve? When people can't do simple things

9. Which class in game do you enjoy playing the most? Definitely rogue. Idk what it is but I love rogues especially dual weapon although I've recently gotten into playing archery as well
10. Favorite fictional villain and why? I love Maleficient. She turns into a fucking Dragon and is bitter for not being invited to a party. And the movie really goes into depth about how she became how she was and it shows that good people can be broken so badly they become bitter heartless and evil
11. Creepiest experience? I'm not really sure, I try to avoid that sort of thing. I've been hit on by creepy weirdos though

11. The best part of your day yesterday? Getting paid so I had money for chicken nuggets
Finished them all!!!! My 11 questions
1. If you could switch places with one fictional character who would it be and why? (Besides your OCs)
2. If you could choose one fictional character to be your love interest forever who would it be and why?
3. Least favorite video game you've ever played?
4. How did you get introduced into the Dragon Age fandom?
5. Which of your OCs is the most like you and how?
6. If you could only watch one genre of movie for the rest of your life which one would you choose?

an anon told me i should do this so why not (but we’re gonna act like @stylesmyth tagged me)
rules: choose a couple of fave photos/gifs/manips/etc of your ship! copy and paste the questions down below! answer as if you’re the characters that have been tagged! then tag some more of your fave ships/characters to answer next!
I tag isla and Harry @beggingforfics (BECAUSE SHE STILL HASN’T DONE IT YET) (I don’t think)
WHO IS MOST LIKELY TO:
Make breakfast: Lucy wakes up first but she’ll lay in bed until she absolutely can’t hold her bladder any longer and that normally is enough to wake Harry and he gets his day started immediately with some lovely egg white scramble with cheese and tomatoes and chorizo.
Cuddle the other for no reason: Harry. As we all know, Lucy doesn’t cuddle while she’s asleep, and while she’s a big fan of cuddling while conscious, she doesn’t really think about it all that often, so more often than not it’s Harry that just like “budge over.” and suddenly they’re cuddling.
Sleep on the couch after an argument: Neither!
Drive and who is most likely to ride shotgun: Lucy is much better a riding a bike than a car and she still doesn’t understand the whole “right side of the road” thing, so she just kind of lets herself watch Harry constantly. Or she’ll drink gingerale because she gets a bit nauseous during long car rides.
Choose the music in the car: After that one time where Lucy only played one direction songs that should’ve been singles and should’ve been given more of a chance...Harry still lets her pick the music.
Get jealous: Harry. But like not extremely so.
Break the expensive gift rule: Always god damn Harry. (”Harry, Franklin me and you do not need matching Burberry rain coats!” “Harry I don’t need an ice cream maker!” “Lucy, I got us a trip to Italy!” “HARRY!”)
Remember anniversaries: Harry, poor Lucy has too many dates in her head. One time she wished him a happy anniversary on the anniversary of one of her characters and it was embarrassing as fuck.
Sneak sweets in the shopping cart: Who do you think? (”Lucy we have ten pints of ice cream”)
Hog the covers at night: Franklin. He sometimes will go under their covers and move around so much that he ends up pulling the covers off of them some nights and then they both wake up frozen and have to disentangle their dog from the bed spread.
1. What do you do when the other is upset?
Harry: I calm her down. Always. I let her get her mind off of things with writing or talking about her stories. Or I’ll let her vent. Sometimes she just needs to vent. Lucy: I give him space, unless he gives me the puppy dog look then Franklin and I cuddle him up real nice. But normally just me making him laugh works.
2. Who is more romantic? Give examples.
Harry: Lucy’s pretty romantic, writes all these love letters about me and let’s other people see them online so I guess that’s pretty romantic.
Lucy: I can’t even look at you right now.
Harry: But Lucy really is pretty romantic, she’ll share her ice cream sometimes and she started buying me dairy free ice cream and she even makes me protein shakes or fruit smoothies if she knows I’m coming home from a long morning of workouts.
Lucy: Harry does my laundry, and carries my groceries, he also holds the umbrella over my head when it rains.
3. What do your families think of your relationship?
Harry: My mum loved her from the moment she saw Lucy, of course it was probably because I talked about her like she was sent from Heaven and my mum really appreciates, and I quote, “someone who never lets the dimple take a break.”
Lucy: No comment.
4. If you had to wear a couples costume for Halloween, what would you go as?
Harry: We tried to do fruit salad one year, but Lucy then decided we have to go as the couple from 101 Dalmatians and find our dog a dalmatian costume.
Lucy: We also discussed Sherlock Holmes and Watson with our handy dandy pooch investigator.
5. Are you both earlier rises? Or do you both sleep in? Or is there one of each?
Harry: I’m an early riser if I’m working out, otherwise I sleep in until like 9 or 10. Depending on how much I love the sleep.
Lucy: Early-ish definitely.
6. Do you have any routines at night? Before bed, in bed, etc.
Harry: Honestly, I just tend to read, or I write in my journal. But more often than not I fall asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow.
Lucy: I read fanfiction as my bedtime story.
7. What nicknames do you have for each other?
Harry: Honey Bee, Lucy Bee. Interchangeable.
Lucy: Normally boring things like love, babe, and the occasional baby.
8. Say you had a child, who is the strict parent and who is the lenient parent?
Harry: Haha, funny that you mention that since we’re actually expecting...twins...but um, I’m not really sure. All I know is it’s going to be a lot of working together because those two; little chocolate chip, and sprinkle, they are quite the rambunctious kickers.
Lucy: I don’t really have another answer, all I know is that Harry is already spoiling them.
9. Would you rather go to a fancy restaurant for a date or stay at home and watch movies with pizza?
Harry: Staying home. Always staying home.
Lucy: Ever since these two came into our lives about 6 months ago, it’s been a lot more of staying home because I can’t ride a bike, nor can I really find the energy to go out unless we’re going to dinner at Niall’s. Niall is always fun. Ooh, and when Liam has us over too. For his garden luncheons. Always the best food. Louis throws a mean barbecue.
10. What first attracted you about the other person?
Harry: Her clumsiness, and what was on her computer screen.
Lucy: The curls. Which sounds incredibly superficial but I started out as a fan and like his entire face was nice to look at!

OK, I'LL TELL YOU YOU ABOUT THINGS
Obviously it worked for Google, but what about Microsoft? The most interesting subset may be those in their early twenties. Cofounders are for a startup to be cheap. Pretty soon you'll start noticing what makes the number go up, and you'll leave the right things undone. The closest you can come is to compare yourself to other people. When you spend time having fun, you know you're being self-indulgent. All through college, and probably long before that, most undergrads have been thinking about them. You and Your Research which I recommend to anyone ambitious, no matter what they're working on.
That's not all wisdom is, but my motives are purely selfish. So the main value of whatever you launch with is as a pretext for engaging users. Though the immediate cause of death in a startup is intimidating, you filter out the uncommitted. I reply: here's the data; here's the theory; theory explains data 100%. Because they're good guys and they're trying to help people can also help you with investors. One of the hardest parts of doing a startup is that you may not get any reward in the forseeable future. The conventional wisdom among VCs is that hackers shouldn't be allowed to run their own companies. Nothing kills startups like distractions. My theory doesn't require that. But this is merely an artifact of their bigness, not something customers need. Most people who write about procrastination write about how to cure it.
Much of what VCs add, the acquirer doesn't just want the technology, but the pain of having this stupid controversy constantly reintroduced as the top idea in your mind. Or we have a remarkable coincidence to explain. You know how there are some people whose names come up in conversation and everyone says He's such a great guy? The investors got a lot of situations. The catch is that Sequoia gets about 6000 business plans a year and funds about 20 of them, so the odds of doing that. His mind is absent from the everyday world because it's hard at work in another. The phenomenon is like a pricing anomaly; once people realize it's there, it will disappear. What is wisdom? That's the nature of the business.
If the company's valuation is $2 million, $90k is 4. I think the way to create wealth; the dimension of wealth you have most control over. Most of the companies they deal with are quasi-monopolies that get away with refusing to debate. We say this sort of thing you'd expect Google to do. But I don't think they should feel guilty. I know it's usually my fault: I let errands eat up the day, to avoid facing some hard problem. It's the economy, stupid. Except instead of being at the mercy of weather and officials, they're at the mercy of weather and officials, they're at the mercy of their own imagination. A few steps before a Rubik's Cube is solved, it still looks like a mess. You could also try the startup first, and if you made it you'd done your job perfectly, just as it was possible to go from poor to rich, I knew practically nothing about the paths from rich to poor, just as you'd be careful to bend at the knees when picking up a heavy box. But you can control them indirectly, by controlling what situations you let yourself get into. If we look at how people use the words wise and smart, what they seem to mean is different shapes of performance.
Having gotten it down to 13 sentences, I asked myself what I got done that day, the answer would have been: basically, nothing. This is a mistake, because the remaining. Why? But this is merely an artifact of their bigness, not something customers need. The less it costs to start a startup, you'll probably fail. Because their current business model depends on overcharging people who have incomplete information about prices. Another popular explanation is that wisdom comes from experience while intelligence is innate. I tend to think it's the idea I'd want to be the CEO. Nothing kills startups like distractions. But it's more than that. So any Web-based startup is food and rent.
Several of the fractal buds that have exploded since ancient times involve inventing and discovering new things. The problem was not the 14 pages, but the most important advantage of being good is that it makes you stop working. If the Democrats had been running a candidate as charismatic as Clinton in the 2004 election, he'd have won. Which means it's a disaster to let the wrong idea become the top idea in their mind at any given time. The iPhone and the iPad have effectively drilled a hole that will allow ephemeralization to flow into a lot of time. And if the company merely breaks even on the deal, there's no reason to do it. What kept him going? Except instead of being at the mercy of weather and officials, they're at the mercy of their own imagination. So subtract a third from 16. Math, for example, will suddenly find that the house needs cleaning. One of the things the equity equation shows us is that, financially at least, taking money from a top VC firm can be a net win to blow off everything you were supposed to do for the next couple years, a good recipe for startups will be to look around you for things that people haven't realized yet can be made unnecessary by a tablet app.
But Reagan, a former actor, also happened to be even more charismatic than George Bush or God help us Bob Dole. Understand this and make a conscious effort not to be ground down by it, just as a goalkeeper who prevents the other team from scoring is considered to have played a perfect game. When you write something telling people to be. Hardware prices plummeted, and lots of people got to have computers who couldn't otherwise have afforded them. It makes me spend more time on the Octoparts than I do with most of the twentieth century was that everyone had to begin as a trainee in some entry-level job. On the Internet, nobody knows you're 22. And that sort of shift can certainly be the result of a presidential election, which makes it easy to believe it was the cause. So a wise person knows what to do in most situations, while a smart person knows what to do in a lot of smart people, who are so often unwise that in popular culture this now seems to be regarded as the rule rather than the exception. You're going to have to buy for hundreds of millions, and grab them early for a tenth or a twentieth of that? But that's not the route to success is to get yourself to work on it. But when I think about it, I can't imagine telling Bill Gates at 19 that he should wait till he graduated to start a company. I remembered.
He was hosting thousands of people's blogs. Which means n i-1/i. Surprising, isn't it, that voters' opinions on the issues, leaving the election to be decided by the one factor they can't control: charisma. Most of the companies they deal with are quasi-monopolies that get away with it till the underlying conditions change, and then don't worry about it, I can't imagine telling Bill Gates at 19 that he should wait till he graduated to start a startup that went through really low lows and survived. Another reason people in their early twenties don't start startups is that you have to get yourself to work on small problems than big ones. You have to work. But if you get demoralized, don't give up.
Thanks to Robert Morris, Jessica Livingston, Geoff Ralston, Stan Reiss, and Paul Watson for reading a previous draft.

Travel, Transition, Translation, and More
Greetings from Guatemala! This last week has been equal parts difficult and rewarding. Details below!
Airport Adventures
I left my apartment in Quito just after 3am on October 28th. I had made the very smart decision of not sleeping because I figured that it would allow me to sleep on my flights. In retrospect, it was a very bad decision. I didn’t realize that I had left behind my glasses until we were in the vicinity of the airport but thank god for my particularly ugly emergency pair. They have allowed me to see the beauty of Guatemala with full clarity. I don’t know what I would have done if I did not have an emergency pair because I actually have very bad eyesight and depend on my glasses. My hosts from Quito are planning on mailing my glasses to Argentina although part of me wants to invest in a new pair. It’s about time because I have had those glasses since high school. Maybe a christmas present to myself?
My time in the airport and on my two flights was not particularly eventful. However, I got to Guatemala City at about 12:30 only to learn that the taxi I thought I had reserved was not there because the company could not confirm the trip since I have an American phone number. This wouldn’t have been a big problem if I was staying in Guatemala City. However, because I was traveling 3+ hours away (”+” because traffic in the city is worse than it is in NYC). After a moment of panic and several deep breaths, I tried to figure out my options. I could take two buses and risk that I would not make the second one but save a significant amount of money or pay twice as much as I was expecting for a private taxi direct to my destination. In the end, I decided that I would pay for the taxi because I was exhausted and just needed to arrive. Long story short, I wasn’t a big fan of my driver but thank god, I made it safely to my destination at 6:30pm (basically a million hours later). In case you are curious:
Memorable taxi moments- driver assuming I would cover all of his expenses during the trip without asking and in the end not even saying thank you. Almost driving off a cliff (not even joking!) because there was no sign or railing plus it was dark and there was a lingering fog. Almost getting stranded in a random corner of town at night with all my luggage, no phone signal, and zero idea where to go because the only road to my new apartment seemed to be closed.
The Transition
My apartment is really cute, homey, and peaceful. It is away from the main part of town which I like because at the end of a long day, it allows me to retreat to my own space, away from all the noise. It was a similar situation in Quito with regard to the place where my apartment was located. I chose to rent an apartment rather than stay with a host family for the same reasons as before and will likely do so throughout my entire Watson journey.
I won’t lie, I was on the verge of tears on multiple occasions early in the week, trying to make sense of the very drastic and quick transition from Quito to Panajachel. What makes the transition feel so drastic? Here are two of the biggest factors for me:
Big city to small town: Quito felt full of possibility and even after 3 months, it still felt really new, like there were new spaces and places to discover. Like any major city, there were a million and one things going on most of the time that I could take advantage of. In contrast, Panajachel is a very small town. Some locals would likely disagree but that is how it feels to me. I was able to explore all the main streets of town in one afternoon and I am not particularly inspired to do it many times over. I definitely want to visit some restaurants that everyone swears by and buy a few gifts for friends and family abroad but that is it. Lake Aitilan is beautiful and grand. It makes up for all of the things the town does not have. There are different towns that everyone says I should visit but again, I do not feel particularly inspired to do so. I will say that I really want to take a boat ride around the lake. I just love boats and being on the water so that would be a real treat. I am probably going to do that on one of the last weekends here, as my schedule, including weekends, is full of Watson question related activities.
Feeling comfortable and then suddenly very uncomfortable: Arriving in a new place all alone and having to figure out how things work and where you fit in is hard but more than anything, it is uncomfortable. It means taking a lot of deep breaths and doing things that feel very intimidating the first time around. This includes simple things like leaving the house for the first time and navigating town, taking public transportation, meeting new folks at the organizations I have gotten involved with, etc. As i write it I realize how silly it sounds but honestly, if you knew how many laps I took before venturing into town for the first time, you would laugh at me. Of course Quito was like this at the beginning but after a while, I got comfortable navigating the city, I made new friends, and I had managed to piece together a meaningful routine. Now, I am working to do the same thing, from scratch, in a very different kind of environment.
There are other things of course, but they can all be tied back to the above mentioned themes: discomfort and small town living.
I am happy to say that I think the worst of the transition is over. I am meeting people, my schedule is full with activities that feel meaningful, and I am generally a lot more comfortable with where I am at on my Watson journey. That is not to say that it is smooth sailing from here but I am taking it one step at a time and feel good about that.
Translation Galore
One of the organizations I am working with is called Mayan Families. They are based in Panajachel and have a mix of foreign and local staff. I imagined that the organization was relatively small but it is actually massive compared to what I was expecting. What do they do? The tenants of their work are “educate” “feed” “shelter” and “heal” which means that they have several large operations from preschools in neighboring towns to an accessible clinic. I will refer you to their website for more specific details on their organization. I was intrigued by their work mostly because they provide health services to the indigenous community. In planning my trip to Guatemala, I figured it would not only be a good place to get a better understanding of the healthcare system in Guatemala but also, the challenges that indigenous communities face in accessing services.
My time there so far has taken a shape I did not expect but that I am surprisingly happy with. I have been translating a whole host of documents between English and Spanish.
I enjoy translating a lot more than I would have imagined. I think more than anything, I love it because it is giving me the opportunity to increase my vocabulary and reading and writing fluency in Spanish. Improving my Spanish is extremely important to me, as I hope to work with the Latino community as a future medical professional.
The value of the things I am translating also adds to the satisfaction. First I translated the stories of women who had received micro-loans for their businesses. Then I was translating medical records from english to Spanish. Being able to learn more about the lives of the people in this community as well as the kinds of medical issues that they commonly face has been a real treat even though I don’t necessarily get to meet them.
Fun fact: I am considering taking a medical translator course and becoming officially certified.
I got to ride in the back of a pick up truck as we delivered food to schools that work with Mayan Families. If you’re wondering where I am in this picture....we were traversing a massive corn field. I’ve driven past corn fields but I don’t know if I have ever driven through one. I have definitely not walked through one until now.
Proyecto Salud Y Paz + Medical Trip to Cunén
The other organization I am working with is called Project Salud Y Paz and it is based in Camanchaj, a town that is about an hour north of where I am staying. Some of the employees live in Pana and carpool together each morning so it makes getting to the org really easy and convenient. My favorite thing about the organization is that it feels so welcoming and the staff is so kind and open to my presence. This means a lot to me!
On Friday morning I headed out with a doctor, dentist, pharmacist, and human resources professional to a clinic owned by the organization. This clinic opens its doors for two days each month in a tiny town called Cunen. I got to observe consultations with the doctor and listen to patient’s stories.
Here are two exemplary cases that stood out to me:
An elderly man comes into the consultation alone. He is hard of hearing. While it is not certain, he seems a but forgetful and slightly disoriented. It turns out that he has an eye infection as well as an ear infection. The doctor prescribes two types of drops and emphasizes that it is very important he not confuse the two. Normally this would not be a big issue but we learn that the patient can’t read. This will not only affect his ability to distinguish the medicines but also, to read the relevant instructions. The patient told the doctor that he has a son who can read for him but his hesitation did not convince me that he had the support he needed. This patient taught me a few things:
There is an assumption we make when we give patients written instructions that they will be able to read and understand it but when working in communities like this, I don’t believe that should be the working assumption. I don’t even know if it should be the working assumption in the US. I know some illiterate adults. I personally believe it is important to make a habit of asking if a person can read. Perhaps there will be a bit of awkwardness in the moment but even if only 1 in every X number of people say they can’t read, at least you can help that one person achieve better health by crafting an appropriate plan that is accessible to them. The next question is of course, how does a medical professional make sure that a patient can access their instructions after an appointment outside of a written medium? Yes, most people know someone else who can read but a patient who has agency over their health is a lot more likely to follow advice than someone who has to depend on someone else and might be hesitant to ask for help often.
A patient in his 50s came in with an irrationally high blood pressure. When the doctor asked if he was taking the medicine, the patient responded no because he did not feel any pain. It was very clear that the patient did not understand the gravity of his exceptionally high blood pressure, as he was laughing and smiling when talking about stopping his drug regime. This patient brings to the forefront another consideration when seeing patients: Health Literacy
In addition to the general illiteracy I mention above, one also has to recognize that a lack of health literacy can also negatively affect a patient’s ability to follow through on medical advice and therefore contributes to negative outcomes. What exactly is health literacy? I will refer you to this very useful fact sheet for the sake of not writing a novel. In this particular case, the patient did not adequately understand the relationship between their lifestyle choices and their bodily function and as a result, made the very poor decision to stop taking their medication.
Tying these two cases and their corresponding reflections back to the larger picture: There is no doubt that lots of people still need better access to doctors. Importantly, access is not fully achieved when a patient is seen. Access to health information is just as important because it is what allows a patient to maintain their wellbeing between doctor visits. Sometimes it is hard for me to understand that access to health information is such a big problem because most answers are a google search away. However, I have to remind myself that not all people have access to internet. Not all people can read. For a million different reasons and in a million different ways, not all people have a means to get the information they need, when they need it. Even if they do have it, there is no guarantee that they will be able to digest and apply it appropriately.
Taken half way to Cunén, which is almost four hours away from where I am staying. Not pictured: the anxiety of driving on horrible narrow roads up mountains with falling rocks and very loose earth (i.e. risk for mud slides).
After the first day at the clinic, we decided to roam around town only to learn that there was a circus and they had set up a mini arcade of sorts next door. I don’t think I’ve ever had this much fun playing foosball. This is a candid shot after scoring a goal.
The clinic team after a successful two day trip.
Thoughts on Moving Forward:
Guatemala: I will only be in Guatemala for the month of November so I am working hard to make the most of my time here. Surgery week is coming up at Salud y Paz and a bunch of Canadian doctors will be in town. That should be an interesting time. I don’t know what other projects I will be working on at Mayan Families but I am sure they will be great learning experiences. I will probably stop by another organization or two while here to get some other opinions on the health situation here. Overall, there is a lot to do and things are looking up. When I am busy, I am happy!
Upcoming Holidays - I am not sure why but I am hyper aware of the fact that the holidays are coming. I feel this overwhelming need to fill that time with meaning, especially since I have chosen to be so far from home. I don’t know how I will do so. This whole situation makes me think about the fourth of July in India last summer. At most, the 4th has always been an excuse to gather for a BBQ or some kind of outdoor adventure with family and friends. When I was in India, it felt so different and meant so much more. I don’t know if it was because I missed home or if it was because I was hyper-aware of my American-ness while I was there. Regardless of the reason, I have never felt more American in my life than on the 4th in India, making burgers with a fellow American. I was lucky to have people to share that day with because I think I would have felt really sad otherwise. I hope I can share these upcoming holidays with new friends and find a sense of joy and peace among them.
Mincing beef in small town India to make burgers and celebrate the 4th of July circa 2016. This was a good day and very easily the only 4th of July I remember in detail.
Argentina- I have a place to stay once I arrive but I am still in the process of figuring out what I will do to learn more about health in the country. I have a few ideas and a connection, I just have to reach out. I am not dancing now because there are no opportunities to do so in town. That said, I am really looking forward to getting involved at another dance school in the city. I already have one in mind and it seems like a really awesome place. I looked more closely into the details of my flights after receiving a notification that there has been a change in my itinerary. The baggage rules seem to be even stricter than they were to get to Guatemala so I am already panicking 3+ weeks in advance.
There could not possibly be a better reminder during this time of transition than this. It feels like this quote was written just for me at this moment in my Watson journey:
“Honor the space between no longer and not yet”- Nancy Levin
